THRUWAY AUTHORITY ANNOUNCES COMPLETION OF $9.7 MILLION PAVEMENT IMPROVEMENT PROJECT ON I-87 IN ORANGE AND ULSTER COUNTIES

Work Included Full-Depth Repairs, Resurfacing and Additional Safety Upgrades

The New York State Thruway Authority today announced the completion of a $9.7 million pavement improvement project on the New York State Thruway (I-87) spanning Orange and Ulster counties. The work covered a nearly eight-mile stretch between interchange 17 in the town of Newburgh in Orange County to the town of Plattekill in Ulster County.

“This project benefits the more than 40,000 motorists who travel this section of Thruway each day by offering greater roadway reliability and a smoother drive,” Thruway Authority Acting Executive Director Frank G. Hoare said. “These infrastructure investments don’t tend to get a lot of attention but are critical to enhancing the driving experience on our system.”

The project started this past April and included full-depth pavement repairs, meaning crews removed and replaced the most deteriorated portions over approximately 22 total lane miles on the roadway (from milepost 60.1 to 63 northbound and milepost 60.1 to 68 southbound). Crews also improved the structural integrity of the roadway and added a new layer of asphalt to provide a smooth driving surface. Additional safety improvements included new guiderail, additional reflective line striping and upgrades to acceleration and decelerations lanes at interchange 17 in Newburgh.

Callanan Industries, Inc., of Albany, was the project contractor.

The Authority’s approved 2023 Budget invests a total of $413 million to support its Capital Program, which is scheduled to invest $1.9 billion into capital projects through 2027. In 2022, motorists took more than 376 million trips and drove 7.7 billion miles on the Thruway system.

For up-to-date travel information, motorists are encouraged to download its mobile app which is available to download for free on iPhone and Android devices. The app provides motorists direct access to real-time traffic and navigation assistance while on the go.

Travelers can also visit the Thruway Authority's interactive Traveler Map which features live traffic cameras. Motorists can also sign up for TRANSalert e-mails, which provide the latest traffic conditions along the Thruway.
